Congrats to Kim Benard!

Congrats to Kim Benard!

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to share some terrific news about a member of our staff, Kim Benard, associate dean and director of distinguished fellowship and academic excellence.

Kim, who works in the Office of Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD), was just selected by the White House for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM).

Her award letter states: “This achievement reflects the significant contributions you have made to the field of mentoring and in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.”

As you may have read on MIT News or heard from me at a recent All Hands, MIT has had a “bumper crop” of fellowship award winners this past year. What you may not know is how intensive and hands-on the process is for students applying for such awards, from filling out the lengthy applications to writing personal essays to preparing for interviews to even managing topical dinner conversation.

Kim and her team are with applicants every step of the way. Whether or not they win, we know that students find the process to be deeply meaningful and even life changing. The level of mentorship, inspiration, and care provided is truly exceptional.

Please extend my congratulations to Kim and kudos to all those who help our students to thrive at MIT.

Best,

Dan
